The Promise Of Rain

Not many people would actually care that it will rain this week.  At least I didn’t until I moved to Las Vegas.  The annual rainfall in Vegas is around 4 inches a year.  Lately things have been much slimmer than that.  We have been in a drought in the West for about 6 years now.

Lake Mead, the reservoir that the local communities in the area get their water, is at an all time low.  The water level has dropped approximately 100 feet since January 2000.

White Striations Shows Previous Water Level

Even if it rains all week it won’t really make a dent in the reservoir levels.  The reservoirs in the system are fed via snow pacts in Colorado.  It would be nice to have something other than 110 degree weather though.

Aquafina’s Source Is Tap Water

I for one am glad Aquafina’s source is tap water.  At least I know that their source has federal standards associated with it and not just some unregulated spring someplace.  I work with some people who do water quality analysis, and one of the things they love to do is show how samples from bottled water have higher chemical content than tap water. Chemicals like perchlorate (used in the production of rocket fuel).  If you don’t like the taste of tap water, get a reverse osmosis system or charcoal filter.

Aquafina labels to spell out source – tap water – Yahoo! News

PepsiCo Inc. will spell out that its Aquafina bottled water is made with tap water, a concession to the growing environmental and political opposition to the bottled water industry.

Memories From My Childhood Via Las Vegas Rain

It rained last night in Vegas, where I live.  I leave for work around 6:00, and mornings like today are why I love driving a Jeep with no upper doors and a bikini top.  The sun was low and there was that beautiful cool heaviness in the air.  I always think of days I spent on my grandparent’s farm when it gets like that.  Getting up with them in the early morning.  The routine was to have breakfast, usually eggs and toast.  My grandfather and I would drive around the property in an old Chevy Silverado pickup checking fences and cattle.

Are Jeeps More Civil Now?

I had to help my little brother drop off a vehicle to one of the Jeep dealerships last week.  While waiting for him to fill out the drop off form I thought I’d take a look at the new Jeeps.  I looked at the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited.

From the outside they looked beefier with wide fenders and a slightly sloped grill area.  Then I looked inside.  Cloth interior, back seat, A/C, molded plastic interior, cup holders…  First thing that came to my mind was, "how am I supposed to hose that out?"

To me owning a Jeep means being exposed to the elements because you like being closer to nature.  I own a 1993 YJ Wrangler 4 banger with a manual transmission.  My interior consists of bed liner, no back seat and vinyl front seats because I clean my interior with a hose.  For at least 8 months of the year the top half of my doors sit in a shed.

Seeing that my brother was ready to go I started walking back.  A salesman in his late 50s early 60s came up to me and asked if I needed any help.

I said, "No, just checking out the new stuff.  I have a ’93 at home."

There was a slight pause.  Then I continued, "You know, Jeeps have really gotten civil."  The salesman started laughing pretty hard at that point.  Apparently he remembers a different Jeep like I do.

Can’t Find Nyne Anymore

I can’t seem to find shirts by Nyne anymore. I used to be able to find them at my local Macys store, but it doesn’t seem like they carry them anymore. Their shirts were great.  They had a retro look with a slim cut on them.  I have fairly broad shoulders and slim waist, and they were the only shirts that fit right off the rack.  One thing I hate is a baggy shirt.  I understand I’m in the minority when it comes to not being overweight in America.

Why Am I Looking At Sweaters In Summer?

My morning routine is get up, do the morning SSS, go downstairs, pour myself some cereal and read one of the many periodicals I get.  So I’m munching on some Raisin Bran Crunch and reading Details (Don’t judge me), and I come across a clothing spread (something you’d expect).  I live in Las Vegas and it’s 90 degrees before 8am.  Why am I looking at sweaters and coats in July.  Not everyone lives in Maine and can wear what would be considered late Fall, Winter and parts of Spring clothing in the Summer.

Wake the F up.  Who in their right mind would wear the clothing in that magazine in the summer?  Change a gear once in a while.  While your at it show me a travel bag that doesn’t cost 2k.

People Rummaging Through My Jeep YJ Wrangler

July 12, 2007

I’ve had my Jeep Wrangler for close to 10 years, you’d think by now I’d be used to people rummaging through and stealing my stuff.

Because it’s hot as hell in Las Vegas, I only have a bikini top on my YJ Wrangler. So, when I approached the vehicle it quickly became apparent that someone had opened my glove box. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that if it’s not locked down it will get stolen.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my YJ. Hell, she’s a 1993 with less than 94k miles. She’s been good to me for many years, and I know I can count on her to start every morning. (Except that time someone stole my battery. I installed a lock on the hood after that.)

I was just talking with a coworker, and he ran across an online ad that said it was "The best FREE online browser-based & inspired pirate game".  Truly, how many can there be with the following:

  • free
